As part of our community outreach initiative, we held a Sickle Cell Awareness Campaign for mothers at Oko Primary HealthCare Centre in Benin. Our aim was to educate and empower women with knowledge about sickle cell disease, what it is, how it happens, and how to care for a child living with it.
We stressed the importance of knowing one’s genotype before having children, and how early diagnosis can help manage the condition better. Many of the mothers had heard about sickle cell but didn’t fully understand how it works. So we kept things simple using real-life examples, easy explanations, and open conversations.
Beyond just education, we also donated essential medications to support mothers and their children. It was heartwarming to see the level of interest and engagement. This campaign reminded us how powerful knowledge can be especially when it reaches the right people. We’re hopeful that with more of these outreaches, we can build healthier, more informed communities.
